Act from Your Values not Your Feelings

I read a quote a while back that stated, “Act from your values not your feelings.” Unfortunately, I didn’t make note of where it came from but it got me thinking about what that really looks like. What does it really mean? Following is something I wrote in response to that quote and my ponderings….

If you love your children but they make you so angry that you want to scream or ever hurt them at times, act from your values not your feelings.

If you’re having a bad day and you feel like taking it out on someone around you, act from your values not your feelings.

If you have a dream or goal for yourself that you’re committed to but you wake up feeling unmotivated and full of doubts, act from your values not your feelings.

If the group you’re with is behaving or talking in ways that are disrespectful to others and you feel like you have to stay silent to fit in, act from your values not your feelings.

If you value truth, integrity and respect and another attacks your character unjustly, act from your values not your feelings.

If you’re feeling desperate and scared and start believing that the rules no longer apply to you, act from your values not your feelings.

If you made a promise to yourself that upholding would make you a better, healthier, stronger person and you feel like giving up, act from your values not your feelings.

If you value collaboration and team work but you finish first, act from your values not your feelings.

If you’re on top of the world and feel as if you can do no wrong and all the world is at your feet, act from your values not your feelings.

Acknowledge your feelings, honor them, even celebrate them, but remember:  no matter what anyone else sees, knows, believes or remembers about you, you still have to live with yourself at the end of each day. So to become the person you were born to be act from your values not your feelings.
